Minutes:

The meeting started by 3:20 p.m.

Mr. Vijay Kumar from Zilogic System started the session

He talked about ODF and Python

Before diving into the scripts he gave an introduction to

i. XML (since ODF is a XML-based file format)

ii.XML uses

iii.Namespaces

iv. SAX parser handler

He explained the code line by line for

a. How to extract the MIME type for the document ?

b. How to extract the headings of a .odt document ?

c. How to extract the spreadsheet (.ods) contents ?

We had another surprise talk by Mr.Kausikram from Silver Stripe Software

He talked about itertools module

He started with the importance of an iterator

He gave examples for the following itertools functions

a. chain ()
b. permutations()
c. combinations()
d. count ()

Our talk sessions came to an end

Then we discussed regarding Pycon 2011

The attendees got a printed copy of checklist for holding Pycon India  2011

We discussed with the following factors

1. Active Volunteers

2. Venue:

Following venues are considered

a. Anna University
b. MIT
c. IIT
d. Rajalakshmi Enginnering College
e. Crescent Engineering College
f. Jaya Engineering College
g. SRM City / Main Campus

Most of them didnt opt for Government Institutions

Among the seven we shortlisted to approach

a. Rajalakshmi Engineering College
b. Jaya Engineering College
c. SRM City / Main campus

We decided to fix the venue within December with the help of volunteers

3. Number of Days

Most of the attendees opted for a two day event

A question was raised What about the beginners track ? ( Day one if it’s a three day event )

Then we came up with an idea to conduct a workshop (for newbies) in Colleges around Chennai

We fixed a target to conduct a workshop in 10 colleges (atleast) in next 10 months

Minutes of meeting in Chennaipy meet (24 / 07 / 2010)

Dear all,

We ( the attendees) are lucky to attend yesterday’s Chennaipy meet

Yes, we had a special speaker named Mr. Vijay Kumar from Zilogic Systems
Date : 24 / 07 / 2010
Time : 3 p.m to 6 p.m.
Place : MIT, Chromepet
No of People : 10
Topics Discussed :

1. Text processing using Python by Rajeswari
2. GUI programming using Jython by Vijay Kumar
Attendees :
Akilan, Arulalan, Nandha, Ahamed, Praveen, Rajeswari(myself), Elango, Selvamani, Vijay Kumar, Arulappan
I started the session with an introduction to Text Processing
Discussed a few functions present in the modules os, os.path
Shown a simple python script of how to search for a particular file.
Followed by Mr. Vijay Kumar told us the basics of Jython
He talked about advantages of GUI programming using Jython when compared to other GUI’s ( Tkinter, PyGTK, PyQt ).

He continued with how to use Swing libraries with Jython ?

Shown examples from helloworld program to a form creation.

Explained the basics of callbacks.

We raised many questions towards Mr. Vijay Kumar ( general python questions too )

We had  discussions related to Glade, GTKBuilder, libglade.

He also displayed how to create a simple setup.py file

Mr. Vijay Kumar told us to give more talks in future 🙂

Then Arulalan, who is doing real time project in Indian Meterological Department using Python showed a real time
application of using Text processing

Also, he showed his final output.

Further discussions involved to come forward to give talks in PyCon India 2010, how to bring more people to Chennaipy meet , conducting python workshop for newbies.

On the whole, the session was very useful

ChennaiPy May Month Meet (22 -05 – 2010)

Date : 22 – 05 – 2010

Time : 3 pm to 5 pm

Venue : AU-KBC Research Center, MIT, Chromepet.

Attendees : Arulalan, Balakrishnan, Jai Sathishkumar, Malathi, Ramachandran, Rajeswari (myself), Santhosh, Selvam, Shyamshankar, Suresh, Vatsala Dorairajan

Talk Details:

Talk 1 : Introduction to Python by Balakrishnan

Talk 2 : ncurses in Python by Arulalan

Talk 3 : Introduction to SciPy by Jai Sathishkumar

Talk 4 : PyGtk Introduction by Rajeswari

Balakrishnan started the session. He taught fundamentals of Python language. Also he gave an intro about bpython.

Arulalan demonstrated how programming is done using ncurses. He shown live examples.

Jai Sathish gave an intro of SciPy and NumPy.

Rajeswari(myself) gave an intro to PyGTK programming. I taught two basic programs with an introduction to signals and callback functions.

At the end of the sessions we received feedbacks.

Also, we planned to conduct this meet for twice a month.
